The Cork market

Cork has substantial pre-2000 housing stock — particularly the inner suburbs (Mayfield, Gurranabraher, Knocknaheeny, Togher, Mahon) where mid-century local authority housing still dominates. Properties of that era often retain original Artex ceilings, AIB panelling, vinyl floor tiles or asbestos cement roofs on outbuildings — all materials that warrant survey before any refurbishment.

The surveyor supply is concentrated in the east of the country. Some Munster firms hold the relevant qualifications, and Dublin- or Galway-based surveyors take Cork jobs with travel costs in the quote.

When testing is required

Under S.I. No. 632/2025, a refurbishment/demolition asbestos survey is required before any refurbishment or demolition of a pre-2000 building. This applies to Cork as it does everywhere in the Republic. Common Cork triggers:

  • Pre-purchase due diligence on Edwardian, mid-century or 1970s–80s housing
  • Croí Cónaithe-funded refurbishment of vacant property in West Cork or rural East Cork
  • Solar PV install on pre-2000 farm or domestic outbuildings
  • Internal renovation or extension to pre-2000 housing in the metropolitan area

County coverage

Cork county is the largest in Ireland by area and surveyor coverage is uneven:

  • Cork City and the metropolitan area (Bishopstown, Douglas, Glanmire, Ballincollig, Carrigaline) — best coverage.
  • North Cork (Mallow, Fermoy, Mitchelstown) and East Cork (Midleton, Cobh, Youghal) — usually a travel premium added to the quote.
  • West Cork (Bandon, Skibbereen, Bantry, Schull) — largest travel premium because of distance from where most surveyors are based.

What does it cost in Cork?

We do not publish typical Cork survey prices because there are none we can verify. Cork jobs that need a non-Cork-based surveyor will include a travel cost in the quote. Ask the surveyor for a written quote against your property and the survey type.

Frequently asked questions

Are there asbestos surveyors based in Cork?

The supply of qualified asbestos surveyors in Cork is thinner than in Dublin. Some Munster-based firms hold the relevant competence (BOHS P402 or equivalent), and Dublin- or Galway-based surveyors take larger jobs in the region with travel costs included in the quote. The lab analysing the samples is typically UK-based regardless of where the surveyor is.

What does an asbestos survey cost in Cork?

There is no published price list for asbestos surveys in Cork or anywhere in Ireland. Cork jobs that need a Dublin- or Galway-based surveyor will include a travel cost in the quote. Ask for a written quote against your property and the type of survey you need.

Where do Cork samples get analysed?

Samples taken in Cork are sent to a UKAS-accredited laboratory — typically a UK-based lab — for analysis under polarised light microscopy. The surveyor handles the postage and chain of custody and returns a written report identifying whether asbestos is present and the fibre type.
